Multi-platinum, Grammy-winning engineer, mixer, producer and pioneering mixing educator Charles Dye (Lauryn Hill, Jon Bon Jovi, Julio Iglesias, Sammy Hagar, Ricky Martin) brings his proven method of teaching mixing to the classroom.

Join him for this unique opportunity as he teaches you how to get big sounding, record-quality mixes. Learn how to get amazing sounds with plug-ins, breathe emotion into the music with automation, and make the artist sound like a star.

Charles has assisted literally thousands to get better results with their mixes through his popular online mixing tutorial Hard Disk Life, and his successful DVD/DAW session based mixing course Mix It Like A Record. Now, he has expanded his mixing curriculum and developed this advanced mixing workshop.

This workshop expands on concepts from the critically acclaimed Mix It Like A Record course. Charles will build upon everything from the DVD and go in-depth into every single element of what it takes to make a great mix. By the time you complete the workshop you'll understand the theory behind the techniques, and how they are turned into actions that support the song and artist. And you'll not only learn how, but also the "whys" behind the "hows" of making a mix sound like a record.

You'll learn how to:

Tracks

  • Get big-sounding, record-quality mixes.
  • Create mixes with depth and width without sacrificing impact.
  • Get a cohesive sounding mix.
  • Bring out the most important element of each track so it will work well with the other instruments.
  • Create signature sounds that give the artist an aural identity.
  • Get huge and powerful drum sounds.
  • Get a warm fat bass sound that can be heard in small speakers.
  • Get a big guitar sound without overpowering the drums or vocals.
  • Create keyboard sounds that add depth, color and size to the mix.
  • Create big background vocals without getting in the way of the lead.
  • Get a lead vocal sound that grabs the listeners attention and connects them with the emotion of the singer's performance.
  • Use distortion to your advantage.
  • Make the digital mix buss sound analog.
  • Compress the stereo mix - at the beginning or end of the mix.
  • Use stereo wideners to make your mix bigger than the speakers.

Effects

  • Setup your effects at the beginning of the mix.
  • Use hall, chamber, plate, room + non-linear reverbs, and what they sound best on.
  • Use chorus, flange, phasers + hamonizers to add width, size + color to your tracks.
  • Use delays to create depth, create a mood + enhance the rhythm of a part.

Automation

  • Make magic happen with automation.
  • Setup the basic structure of your mix by balancing the tracks in each section of the song.
  • Setup the basic structure of your mix by getting a different blend of the tracks for each section of the song.
  • Inject dynamics and excitement at the transitions and with effects splashing.
  • Create an ever-evolving mix keeping the listener's attention from first bar to last.
  • Breathe emotion into the music with automation.
  • Ride the lead vocal to truly bring out the singer's star quality.

And you'll learn:

Mixing Theory

  • What mixing is and its importance in the process of making a record.
  • What defines that "record" sound.
  • The importance of distortion in the history of recording, and how it influences today's records.
  • That even though it may feel like your mixes aren't getting better - they are (and why and how).
  • Using different speakers while mixing and what to listen for on each type.
  • How to create a sound for a mix that brings out the best in the song and stays true to the artists vision.
  • Different techniques to keep your mixes fresh and interesting.
  • How to create depth, space and separation with reverb, delays and modulation/pitch effects.
  • What defines "star quality".
  • The elements that make up a great mix.

Prerequisites:

The content of this workshop assumes you have a working knowledge of EQ, compression, effects, and digital audio workstation fundamentals.
